The Manga Critic Turns One!

Anniversary posts are odd beasts: no one wants to toot their own horn too much, but it’s an inherently self-indulgent exercise to remind the world of your continued existence. I’m going to skip the introspection (if you’re curious about why I do what I do, you can read my inaugural post) and cut to the fun stuff: lists! Below is a run-down of the most popular articles and reviews from my first year as The Manga Critic, as well as some fun facts about the site. Thank you for making this first year such a positive, rewarding experience — your comments and links are a wonderful reminder of just how many smart, funny, opinionated manga lovers are out there. Here’s to an even better second year!

  • Happy Birthday and Congrats!

  • Congrats on a great first year! Here’s to many more!

  • Congrats!!! It always a pleasure to come and see what you have to say about manga or manga culture!

  • Haha, what’s with singling out vampire titles? Though Rosario + Vampire is pretty bad…..

  • Thanks for the good wishes, guys — one of the real pleasures of manga-blogging is the tremendous sense of community I get from interacting with other reviewers. It means a lot to hear from so many folks whose work I read and enjoy on a daily basis!

As for your question, Kris, I’m shamelessly ripping off Harper’s Index. I’m kind of a useless information sponge, and have always loved the index’s mixture of cool and bizarre trivia. I figured a similar approach would be more entertaining for readers than a Google Analytics report!

  • Oh my gosh, has it been a year already??? Congratulations and keep on keepin on…reviewing manga :)

  • Congratulations, Kate! In just a year you have started a lot of interesting online conversations. I can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve for next year!

  • Thanks, Brigid — that’s high praise from the undisputed mangablogging queen! The real question for me: how do I follow up a first act in which I became the curator of The Manga Hall of Shame?
