The Shipping News, 5/6/09
If last week’s list favored dewy-eyed heroines and romantic subplots, this week’s features demons, ninjas, and hand-to-hand combat, as four Yen+ titles — Bamboo Blade, Jack Frost, Nabari no Ou, and Sumomomo Momomo — debut in tankubon format. Yen’s line-up also includes the first volume of Ichiroh, a 4-koma series chronicling life in a prep school dorm, and The History of the West Wing, a done-in-one graphic novel from Taiwan. Don’t be fooled by the title: West Wing isn’t Aaron Sorkin doujinshi, or Martin Sheen/Rob Lowe slash, but a period drama about a high-born woman and the humble scholar who loves her. If the gorgeous cover art is any indication of what’s inside, West Wing may prove one of my favorite Yen Press titles to date.
Other noteworthy arrivals include the second volume of Fire Investigator Nanase (CMX); the fourth volume of Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo (Tokyopop); the fourth volume of Nari Kusakawa’s delightful Two Flowers for the Dragon (CMX); and the first volume of Fairy Idol Kanon, a new title from UDON’s all-ages imprint. (Click here for my review at Good Comics for Kids). Full list below.
