The Shipping News, 12/23/09

21 December 2009 3 Comments

This week’s shipping makes for some strange bedfellows: the ultra-violent Gantz (Dark Horse) will be sitting beside Electric Hands (DMP) and Our Kingdom Arabian Nights (DMP), two yaoi anthologies promising, among other things, “an endless supply of beautiful princes and valets.” (I don’t know about you, but I’m partial to the idea of “an endless supply of valets,” especially if they’re handy with a vacuum cleaner or an iron.) The other new arrivals — an omnibus edition of Samurai Deeper Kyo (Del Rey), the third volume of Neon Genesis Evangelion: No, Really, We’re Still Milking This Concept (Dark Horse) — are strictly for hardcore fans; n00bs are advised to backtrack to the beginning of both series if they want a handle on what’ happening.

Since this week’s yield is rather paltry, I decided that I’d direct readers to the numerous “Best Manga of 2009″ lists for suggestions of what to buy on Wednesday. Though just about everyone is preaching the Gospel According to Urasawa, I’ve seen some delightfully idiosyncratic recommendations from the Manga Recon gang, Dave Ferraro, and Scott von Schilling (to name a few): how does “Best Manga You Thought You’d Hate” grab you as a category? I highly encourage you to check out as many lists as you can, as they offer vivid and entertaining proof of just what a great year 2009 was for manga.
