Beast Master! Rarely does a shojo manga charm me and make me laugh so much.

Fairy Idol Kanon by Hakamada Mera. Raucous and fun. Plus I have to promote shoujo that ends up in the tweens section of your local bookstore.

I already have a copy, so don’t enter me in the contest, but I can’t resist a chance to mention Kimi ni Todoke.

I second Kimi ni Todoke as a shojo fav for this year :)

I suspect that there will be other folks nominating Kimi ni Todoke as well; it’s even cropped up in our Good Comics for Kids Best of 2009 list in the teen category. (Full list will be posted tomorrow, BTW.) I’m also glad to see people mention comedies and manga for younger readers, two categories that always get the fuzzy end of the lollipop when it comes it “best of” lists.

    The Name of the Flower.

Hm. In addition to Kimi no Todoke and Beast Master, I have to suggest Otomen and Honey Hunt, both also good for the teen crowd (so far). Otomen is sugary-sweet fun, and Honey Hunt feels like a good learning-to-fly story.

Kimi ni Todoke here too! But I also must suggest Black Bird. The newest guilty pleasure that seems to have found quite a following.

  • Anomalous said:

I have to agree with Otomen. Sweet and funny without feeling forced.

I’m not entirely sure it is a shoujo manga but I nominate Tena on S-String. I really liked the plot as well a the artwork

  • Diana Dang said:

Hm, I’ll say Black Bird. :)

  • Katherine Dacey (author) said:

@Timothy: I’m not sure that Tena qualifies as shojo, but I’m not someone who pays a lot of attention to labels anyway. Consider yourself entered in the drawing.

I’ll nominate Black Bird, with Kimi ni Todoke running a close second. One’s sweet, the other’s akin to a trashy romance novel, but they’re both made of win.

I nominate Kimi ni Todoke (Reaching You) for best new shoujo of 2009 for its sweet optimism and touching scenes.

  • L.M. said:

    Otomen, without a doubt. Adorable.

  • Chevy said:

I nominate my favorite, Otomen. Something original and absolutely the prettiest and cutest thing ever.

  • Margaret said:

I cast yet another vote for Otomen.

  • Hisui said:

Since everyone is already saying Kimi no Todoke and Otomen I am going with a series that did not start in 2009 but is still being released in 2009. I am going to nominate Swan because more people need to be out there reading it and buying it. It is really great 70s shojo with that crazy over the top melodrama that only 70s shojo has. But the story and characters are so solid that it feels grounded and engaging. Good stuff.

  • Lorena said:

I’d have to go with The Name of the Flower — it’s understated and quietly sweet.

  • Judi said:

Otomen would be my choice. It’s funny, sweet and grabed me from the first page. I’m not a big shojo fan, but I’d recommend this to anyone.
