Half-Time Poll III: Most Anticipated New Title of 2009

15 July 2009 12 Comments

Once again, I want to thank everyone who’s voted in the first two “half-time” polls! The response has been enthusiastic and sparked some lively discussion, mostly taking me to task for omitting readers’ favorite titles. (I know, I know: how could I have left NANA off the Best Continuing Series list? I’m doing penance by sponsoring a NANA giveaway. Details here.) The results for the second poll were more evenly distributed than the first, with Black Jack narrowly besting Fruits Basket and Honey and Clover for the top slot. Here are the results:

  • Black Jack (Vertical, Inc.): 17%
  • Fruits Basket (Tokyopop): 16%
  • Honey and Clover (VIZ): 15%
  • Emma (CMX): 10%
  • Flower of Life (DMP): 10%
  • Sand Chronicles (VIZ): 8%
  • Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (Dark Horse): 8%
  • Real (VIZ): 6%
  • Naruto (VIZ): 3%
  • Jyu-Oh-Sei (Tokyopop): 3%
  • The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Yen Press): 2%
  • Astral Project (CMX): 1%

For the third and final poll, I want to know what new title you’ll be buying in the remaining six months of 2009: the CLAMP mangettes? Jiro Taniguchi’s Everest adventure? Or something else? As always, if I’ve left something off the list, let me know what you think should have been included.

UPDATE, 7/15/09: An eagle-eyed commenter noted the omission of several titles, including Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture (Del Rey) and Rin-Ne (VIZ), both of which I’ve added to the poll. I also realized that I’d left off Itazura na Kiss (DMP), a vintage shojo title that has some of my old Manga Recon colleagues abuzz, and corrected my mistake. So get to it: vote early and often!

* Gate 7 is the title of the CLAMP “mangettes” project announced at SDCC 2007.

I voted for “Ooku”, but I would almost have chosen “other”. There are several other notable new series starting August or later:

Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You (August)
    Moyasimon (September)
    Rin-Ne (October)
    Hero Tales (October)
Korea as Viewed by 12 Creators (December)
    Butterflies, Flowers (December)

These are the main ones I’m waiting for, even though I won’t buy “Kimi ni Todoke”, “Korea as Viewed by 12 Creators” and “Butterflies, Flowers” as I already have the French editions.

Thanks for the reminders! “Moyashimon” and “Rin-Ne” are both major omissions, so I’ll be sure to update the poll to include them.

I voted for Itazura na Kiss—I’m intrigued by the classic-shoujo-yness it promises. My “other” vote would also be for Kimi ni Todoke, which I’m already convinced is one of the most delightful and sweet titles in existence :D

I’m intrigued by Itazura na Kiss, too — I’ve enjoyed the older shojo titles that CMX has licensed, and am looking forward to reading something of a similar vintage. I’ve also heard lots of good things about Kimi ni Todoke, so I’ll definitely be checking that out when it’s released next month.

How about another fun poll of “The Most Anticipated Shojo Manga of 2009″ and include Kimi ni Todoke on that list?

  • Katherine Dacey (author) said:

Good idea, Ash! It IS hard to choose between something like Summit of the Gods and Itazura na Kiss — talk about a kumquat-to-apples comparison!

Wow did some research on these titles. I actually am looking forward to A Distant Neighborhood. The premise is actually one of my biggest fantasies. To take my adult knowledge back to my 14 year old self. Geese all the things I did wrong… a chance to make things right.

Might be a little too rough for me to read. Lol

    :/

  • Katherine Dacey (author) said:

Definitely check out A Distant Neighborhood! I read a preview copy of volume one, and it’s great: yes, it’s bittersweet in places, but there are some genuinely hilarious moments, too, as the hero sometimes forgets that he’s trapped inside a 14-year-old’s body.
