Half-Time Poll, Part II: Best Continuing Series of 2009

8 July 2009 9 Comments

I’d like to extend a big thank-you to all the folks who participated in last week’s “half-time” poll. Whatever title pundits crown “Best Manga of 2009,” it’s obvious that readers love Naoki Urasawa, as more than half of you voted for Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka and 20th Century Boys. (Take that, Tatsumi!) Here are the results of the first poll:

  • Pluto: Urasawa X Tezuka (49%)
  • 20th Century Boys (20%)
  • Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei: The Power of Negative Thinking (7%)
  • A Drifting Life (6%)
  • Nightschool: The Weirn Books (4%)
  • Oishinbo A La Carte (3%)
  • Other (3%)
  • The Name of the Flower (2%)
  • Clover Omnibus Edition (2%)
  • Otomen (1%)
  • Detroit Metal City (1%)

Of course, man does not subsist on first volumes alone, so I’m posing a follow-up question: what is the best continuing series of 2009, the one title that just keeps getting better with each new installment?

Don’t see your favorite title listed below? Then tell us what should have been on the list above and why.

Okay… no one else has commented with other titles not listed in the poll that they consider “the best” so I’ll be brave and do so all by myself :D

My favourite two series EVER right now are I Hate You More Than Anyone (CMX) and Kaze Hikaru (Viz). Totally different kinds of series (except that they’re both shoujo), but both absolutely great. I feel such an emotional connection with the characters in both series; it’s a joy every time I get a new volume to read. I love the sense of detail and the “world” created by both Hidaka-sensei and Watanabe-sensei in their respective series. For voting purposes I’d go with “I Hate You” because, as little attention as Kaze Hikaru gets, the former gets even less. But both of them certainly deserve more love!

I can’t believe I forgot to include Kaze Hikaru — clearly, I was having a senior moment! My undergraduate degree is in History, so I have a special weakness for costume dramas — Cantarella, Emma, Samurai Legend, Satsuma Gishiden — but Kaze Hikaru is my favorite. I’m not as crazy about I Hate You More Than Anyone, but I’m a big fan of CMX’s shojo line. The Name of the Rose, Swan, From Eroica With Love and Venus Capriccio are all on my pull list.

    Thanks for your comments!

    Best wishes,
    Kate
