The wailing noise you hear? That’s the collective grief of readers — and retailers — mourning the end of Natsuki Takaya’s best-selling Fruits Basket (Tokyopop), which draws to a close this week. Not to worry, Furuba fans — you can stave off withdrawal by picking up the latest volumes of other popular shojo titles, such as Gakuen Alice (Tokyopop), High School Debut (VIZ), Honey Hunt (VIZ), Love*Com (VIZ), NANA (VIZ), We Were There (VIZ), and The Wallflower (Del Rey). And if it’s Kyo Sohma that you’ll miss the most, you may find solace in Cat Paradise (Yen Press), a new fantasy-adventure series from the creator of King of Thorn and Chikayu Misaki:

At Matabi Academy, students are allowed to bring their pet cats to the dorms. For Yumi Hayakawa, whose favorite hobby is making clothes for her kitty Kansuke, Matabi seems like a sure bet. After all, nothing can possibly go wrong with her best friend at her side! But on the first day of school, the two find themselves face-to-face with a murderous demonic minion on campus! Will Yumi and Kansuke be able to defend themselves and their school against an ancient cat demon’s thirst for vengeance?

Shonen fans will find new volumes of Naruto, Reborn!, and Shaman King (VIZ) gracing bookstore shelves, as well as the first volumes of KimiKiss (Tokyopop), a bromance between a stud and his nerdy friend who’s never been kissed, and Neon Genesis Evangelion: Shinji Ikari Raising Project (Dark Horse), a manga based on an Evangelion video game. Other noteworthy arrivals include two all-ages titles, Choco Mimi and Leave it to PET! The Adventures of a Recycled Super Robot (VIZ); Sinfest (Dark Horse), a print edition of the popular webcomic; and Swallowing the Earth (DMP), one of Tezuka’s earliest forays into adult manga. It’s a problematic work — Tezuka was never particularly good at addressing women’s issues — but one that’s worth reading, especially for fans who are curious to see how Tezuka made the transition from kiddie comics to serious lit.
